At the start of a recent three-day silent retreat, I found myself wondering: What am I doing here, and why am I sharing a room with two complete strangers?
Even though this wasn’t my first or longest retreat in Hungary, I battled resistance throughout the whole event in a picturesque, Danube-side village.
By the end, I knew it had been completely worth it.
The biggest insight I walked away with? How easily the mind creates unnecessary discomfort – and how much kindness and humour can soften that.
Simple insights on a vipassana retreat in Hungary
1. Noticing when I’m on autopilot
I noticed my resistance to cold clearly when I layered on extra clothes, fearing the chilly temperatures during an outdoor meditation. Then, as soon as we were asked to sit on a cold rock in a riverbed, I started shedding those layers one by one.
My illogical action in that moment made me smile. And it reminded me how often I try to protect myself from anticipated discomfort – mainly because I believe that I hate the cold.
2. We’re each other’s keepers
Those strangers, with whom we avoided eye contact for three days to honor the retreat’s strict rules, became silent companions in this shared experience. Together, we held space through sitting and walking meditation, silent meals, and breathwork. And somehow, without words, we supported each other’s practice.
